Course Description:

This three-day workshop is designed for parents, therapists, educators and nurses. It is based on a holistic perspective of feeding development in the context of motor development, respiration, and the sensory system, as well as those critical components of communication and control. The course will offer hands-on training in treatment techniques for introducing and refining spoon feeding, cup drinking, and finger feeding. It will also include program planning and treatment techniques for children with sensory issues and children receiving non-oral feeding.

Course Objectives:

Participants will become familiar with:

  1. The development of normal oral motor function in feeding skills and the interrelation of the oral motor components with gross and fine motor development, respiratory/phonatory development, and communication/cognition development.

  2. Abnormal oral motor patterns and compensations seen in children with severe feeding problems.

  3. The use of treatment techniques including positioning to maximize oral motor function; the use of textures and types of food to enhance a child’s feeding skills and pleasure; hands on techniques to enable a child to handle foods and liquids.

  4. The concept of a holistic approach to a feeding program, incorporating communication and social experiences that strengthen and enrich the child’s experience with food and the importance of finding ways to give the child a sense of control and power in the context of feeding.

  5. Ways to involve a child on a feeding tube or a child aversive to oral feeding in an oral motor (feeding) program.

Teaching methods will include: lecture with visual aids, discussion, hands-on practice among participants, and treatment demonstrations with children who have feeding difficulties. We recommend you wear comfortable clothing.
